PLANTATION SHUTTERS
Plantation shutters are a traditional-style interior window treatment. These types of shutters offer privacy and light control. Plantation shutters fit snugly within the window frame, so they’re usually custom built. Side hinges let the louvered panels swing open to the interior of the room.
BLINDS
Blinds range from DIY types to custom wood blinds. Custom blinds have a great long-term value and come in a variety of colors, sizes, and finishes.
Wood blinds provide durability and a traditional look. They generally come in two- or two-and-a-half-inch slat widths. Wood blinds are made from a variety of woods, including basswood, oak, and cherry. They can also be stained or painted.
Faux wood blinds provide the look of wood at a lower price point. They’re made of less expensive materials, such as PVC, vinyl, or a vinyl-wood composite. Composite blinds are usually more durable and authentic-looking than vinyl blinds. Faux wood blinds are popular for rooms with higher humidity levels, like bathrooms and kitchens. This is because faux wood blinds won’t warp when exposed to moisture. Cleaning shutters and blinds is easy. In general, you won’t need to do more than give the slats a light wipe with a duster or damp cloth.
SHADES
Unlike shutters and blinds, shades don’t have slats that light can pass through. Instead, you control the amount of natural light in a room by pulling the window shade up or down. Shades come in a wide variety of materials. Popular types include woven wood and honeycomb shades. Solera, vignette, and roman shades are also popular. Sunscreens and roller shades are common too. Many shades are power operated. This means you can open and close them from a central control switch, smartphone, or tablet. Most shades are easy to clean. Some types can even be pretreated to resist stains.
HYBRID SHUTTERS
Hybrid window treatments combine the blackout coverage of shades with the look of plantation shutters. Hybrid shutters let you uncover the window completely or adjust the louvers to allow light in.
