Benefits of Window Tinting
Slowed fading. Window films can reduce UV ray levels by 99 percent, decreasing solar heat gain and the amount of light that penetrates a room. By keeping out excess sunlight, window films slow fading and help retain the beauty of furniture, carpets, and artwork, protecting their value for years to come.
Energy efficiency. Because of their ability to reduce solar heat gain and eliminate hot and cold spots in a room, window films can lessen your HVAC system’s workload, resulting in lower energy bills. Some window films can even make double-pane glass as efficient as triple-pane glass, helping the home retain heat during the winter months. Many homeowners choose to have film applied to glass skylights and to windows that receive direct sunlight.
Glare reduction. Window films are available in varying levels of sunlight filtration. They can help soften harsh sunlight, providing more comfortable indoor light levels and reducing glare on computer and TV screens. Window films can reduce glare levels from 21 to 83 percent, depending on the film selected, window location, and region.
Privacy. It is easy to increase a home’s privacy and security with the addition of film on windows by making it more difficult to see inside during daylight hours while still allowing a homeowner the ability to look outside.
Types of Film
Solar control film. Solar control films are used as a shield against the sun’s heat. The film allows glare-controlled sunlight to pass through the windows while screening out the heat-producing infrared light and damaging UV rays. Residential window films are very light and are virtually undetectable when applied to the inside surface of glass. Solar control films have a scratch-resistant coating, and most can be cleaned with paper towels and glass cleaner.
Security and safety film. Security films are manufactured with powerful adhesives to hold window glass together in the event of forced entry into a home. Homeowners can choose from clear or tinted versions as well as varying film thicknesses. Thicker films are typically stronger than thinner films.
Decorative. The process of etching glass is expensive and permanent. Many window films have been developed recently that provide the look of etched glass but at significant savings. Because they are not a permanent installation, “etched” window films can be removed if the homeowner’s design plan changes.
Window Film Installers
Installing window film correctly is an art, so it is important to hire a reputable company with plenty of experience installing the specific product you need. When properly installed, window film is a cost-effective improvement that will function well and look good for many years.
